Schibrowski (2003-08-05 18:07:16): Excuse me - could we please agree on posting in english (or german ?) ONLY ?!

ncastel (2003-08-05 20:39:23): I don't know if you still need this, but you can find an article entitled "Modern Science, Metaphysics and Mathematics" in the Basic Writings collection ISBN: 0060637633.
Here Heidegger does what he is so fond of, giving a new, or as he would say more originary definition of mathematics. He goes back to the greek word... but you can read all about it yourself.
Another place to look would be in his lecture printed in english as the _Metaphysical Foundations of Logic_. (ISBN: 0253207649) This work deals more strictly with logic, and it was done earlier, so it is very close to Being and Time. It deals a lot with Leibiniz.
I hope that that is usefull.

stuartelden (2003-10-02 06:02:04): two of my own articles do this

"The Place of Geometry: Heidegger’s Mathematical Excursus on Aristotle", The Heythrop Journal, Vol 42 No 3, July 2001, pp. 311-28.

"Taking the Measure of the Beiträge: Heidegger, National Socialism and the Calculation of the Political", European Journal of Political Theory, Vol 2 No 1, January 2003, pp. 35-56.

Peter Danenberg (2003-11-02 21:31:33): In addition to GA 19, Platon: Sophistes, which Stuart laid out in “The Place of Geometry: Heidegger’s Mathematical Excursus on Aristotle”; Heidegger devotes an entire chapter in Die Frage nach dem Ding (1962) to “Die neuzeitliche mathematische Naturwissenschaft und die Entstehung einer Kritik der reinen Vernunft”, where he traces the provenance of the mathematic from μάθησις up through Aristotle, Newton, Descartes and Kant:

Die entscheidende Frage lautet: Was heißt here »Mathematik« und »mathematisch«? Es scheint, daß wir die Antwort auf diese Frage nur aus der Mathematik selbst schöpfen können.  Das ist ein Irrtum; denn die Mathematik ist selbst nur eine bestimmte Ausformung des Mathematischen.” (Heidegger: 1984, 68)

Heidegger, Martin: Die Frage nach dem Ding.  Zu Kants Lehre von den Transzendentalen Grundsätzen.  Frankfurt am Main, 1984.
